Welcome to the Denmark Vesey  Spirit of Freedom Monument Website

The DenmarkVesey & The Spirit of Freedom Monument Committee desires to create a Monument to recognize the tenacity and vitality of the spirit of freedom among African-Americans in the Carolina Low Country embodied in the efforts of Denmark Vesey and a number of enslaved persons to liberate themselves from antebellum slavery.

 Denmark Vesey is  best remembered  as the planner of  a  Charleston rebellion of 1822, which led to the establishment of a military garrison to contain future slave rebellions.
